Console tables are a very busy piece of furniture in most homes. While not every home has a console table, those that start to appreciate the use of console tables eventually wonder how they ever lived without them. Consider the foyer in your home. As soon as you walk in the first thing you see is one of those console tables sitting there waiting to greet you. This is a place where your keys can be put down. Perhaps you put the mail on the counter or in a drawer, or tomorrows mail on the counter to remember to take it with you. This is also a good place for a flashlight, the dog’s leash and any number of other items that you are going to need as you go in and out the front door.
Well with all this use every time you are coming and going from the house, there’s no surprise that these tables get quite abused. So, if you have console tables in your home, make sure they are on a good maintenance schedule that will keep them working for you in the months and years to come. Here are some of the things you should consider:
Cleaning
First and foremost you want to keep your tables clean. After all if this is what you are coming in the door to, don’t you want it to be attractive? Start by dusting the surface. Luckily console tables don’t tend to gather too much dust because they are always being used and your activity around the console tables keeps the dust from settling. However, there is always some that will get caught up on the corner or on the top edge. So go ahead and dust that table off every week or so to keep it clean.
Next you need to think of a little deeper cleaning. As you are coming in and out, especially if you have been working in the garden or had food and drink in your hands, chances are a little bit of that dirt or food and grime has transferred itself to your console tables. You are going to want to get this off of the console tables so take a cloth with some warm, soapy water and clean the table up. Generally all you have to do is wipe it a little bit and whatever dust or dirt is there will come right off.
Next you need to worry about the physical hardiness of your console tables. If you have tables with drawers, shelves, cabinets, etc and you are opening and shutting them regularly, chances are they are going to get a little weak over time as they loosen up. All you need is a screwdriver to fix this, as well as a little patience. Take the screwdriver and move around to all the joints, tightening up all the screws. Check for anything that seems to be getting a little wobbly or weak and fix it up. This way you can keep these console tables from taking any real damage.
Unfortunately many people ignore problems with the hardware on their tables until it’s too late. You see, that creaky cabinet door or that drawer that’s just a little bit loose needs to be fixed right away. If you don’t the problem will continue to get worse and worse. Eventually what just tightening a screw could have solved has now become a situation where the screw has completely widened the hole that it’s in and will no longer hold no matter how much you try to tighten it. This is going to take a lot more detailed repair to get it fixed and working again.
Having console tables in the entry way to your home is like having a good friend waiting to help you out when you come in and out of the house. They are there to hold the mail, the keys, the dog’s leash and collar and anything else that you may need as you walk in and out of the door. Make sure to take care of that friend by putting your console tables on a regular maintenance schedule.
