While the winter is still here, it is a good time to start making that checklist of things you need to do when spring arrives. One of the things you need to make sure you put on that list is checking our your patio furniture tables to make sure they are ready to be put back into operation.
A lot of things can happen to your patio tables during the winter. And some of these things can weaken the structure of them and make them less safe for you, your family and friends to use once spring has come.
Here are some of the things you should check for before using those tables.
Hardware
During the winter there can be a lot of changes to the hardware in the tables in your yard. What happens is that the cold weather will cause the material that the table is made out of to expand and contrast with the temperature. This can pull the table away from the hardware a little bit at a time. This is essentially a very gradual loosening project. Each time it happens the hardware will only move a minute amount. But, throughout a whole winter it can really loosen up a lot of pieces of hardware to the point where some of them may even come out of their holders. Others will be partially unscrewed and not nearly as stable as they should be.
While at first glance the table may look OK, as soon as you try to move it or add weight it may collapse. So, it’s best that you check and tighten all hardware before using it for the first time after winter. Really it does not take too long and taking this simple step could be enough to save your furniture and keep you or someone else from getting hurt.
Material Weakening
Some materials can actually weaken in winter. Wood has a tough time with winter weather and may start cracking and splitting from the dry and freezing weather. Plastic and other materials can also become structurally weaker from cold weather as well. So, you should really take a close look at the material of your furniture. Look it over from top to bottom. Look especially closely at areas where there are joints and portions that are going to have to hold a lot of pressure. Look for any cracking or splitting that could tell you there is a weakness and a potential problem that needs your attention.
If you see any structural problems, you need to fix these before you put your patio furniture tables to use. Sometimes there is a quick fix to these problems. Other times they may be too severe and you may have to replace the tables. While this is not something anyone wants to do, it is a much better option than having a table that falls apart on you when you are serving up for family and friends, or even worse falls on and hurts a child or pet.
